KIEV-PECHERSK LAVRA – UNESCO

CitySightseeing bus tour + Guided tour to Kyiv
Pechersk Lavra

Duration: 1,5 hours bus tour + 3,5 hours guided tour

Description: Kyiv Pechersk Lavra is a unique monastery complex, listed as a UNESCO World
Heritage Site. It is one of the first monasteries  of the ancient state of Kyivan Rus. The
Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra dates back to 1051, when the first monk Anthony settled in a cave
in the Dnieper hills. It is still one of the holiest places for Orthodox Christians. Every
year a large number of pilgrims come here to worship the relics of the saints, among
them Nestor the Chronicler, Alipiy the painter, doctor Agapit, epic hero Ilya Muromets
and many more.
Lavra is a city within the city, numbering over 100 buildings, most of which are
architectural monuments. Today the complex includes an elevated part with temples,
monastic cells and museums, and an underground one with close and distant caves
where the relics of holy monks rest. All of these are definitely worth visiting once you
are in Kyiv!
Don’t miss the climb up the Great Lavra Bell Tower. It was built in the 18th
century and is still one of the tallest bell towers in the world. Its height is almost
100m.
